By Lim Guan Eng, Secretary General of the DAP
DAP condemns both MCA and Gerakan for obediently following Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak in breaking his thrice-repeated promised to abolish the Sedition Act, despite the promise by both MCA and Gerakan earlier to support its repeal. Instead of the mea culpa by publicly apologising and expressing its willingness to be punished severely by the voters at the next general elections for lying and being dishonourable, both parties have not shown any remorse whatsoever.
Instead, both parties have behave arrogantly, by whitewashing the breaking of the Prime Minister’s thrice-repeated promise as necessary, and that they will support the retention of the Sedition Act and making it even harsher. They have even tried to distract attention of their dishonesty and cheating of voters, by asking why DAP did not question PAS on implementing hudud, even though DAP had already done so.
Unlike both parties, DAP had consistently opposed the implementation of hudud laws by both PAS and UMNO. To date, both MCA and Gerakan did not dare to oppose UMNO’s support for implementing hudud laws at Cabinet meetings and have even gone along with the Federal government setting up a high-level technical committee with PAS to facilitate the implementation of hudud. Why is both MCA and Gerakan only oppose PAS implementing hudud but not by UMNO.
DAP had demonstrated that we keep our promises and that we would oppose and vote against any implementation of hudud laws in Parliament whether by PAS or UMNO. An early indication of our commitment and keeping our promises is shown by DAP putting up our own DAP Sekinchan Assemblyman Ng Suee Lim for the post of Selangor State Assembly Deputy Speaker against the PAS candidate recently.
Would MCA and Gerakan have to courage to vote against UMNO’s amendments strengthening the Sedition Act 1948 in March 2015 similar to what DAP had done in not voting for the PAS candidate for the Selangor State Assembly Deputy Speaker?
