KUALA LUMPUR, AUG 6: The onus is now on Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to “walk their talk” and investigate Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s RM2.6 billion “donation” in his account, the DAP said today.
“The MACC must not betray the trust placed in them by Parliament. They must do their job effectively without fear or favour. They must demonstrate that they are fair in their dealings with everyone and that they do not practice double standards,” DAP National Legal Bureau Gobind Singh Deo said in a statement.
“There is no point in making public statements which generate sympathy alone and they shouldn’t be afraid,” he added.
Earlier on Monday, MACC released a statement dismissing the claim that US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) transferred into Najib’s personal account, as alleged by Wall Street Journal, was from the state fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), but merely a “donation” from Middle-East.
However, MACC did not state the origin of the donation and also the name of the donor.
Since then, rumours alleging that MACC had halted its investigation on 1MDB scandal emerged afer the “crackdown” of seven MACC senior officials, including MACC division chief Bahri Mohamad Zain, for allegedly leaking documents pertaining to investigations.
The anti-graft body consequently issued another statement clarifying that they had not relented in their investigation and will continue probing into Najib’s account for the alleged “donation”.
“So what are they waiting for now that they have confirmed that they will question the Prime Minister over the so called RM2.6 billion in his account?” said Gobind.
The Puchong MP also said that MACC has the power to charge whoever is interfering with their investigation, alluding to the aforementioned “crackdown” of MACC.
“The MACC is a creature of statute. It has wide powers, including powers of arrest and detention for the purposes of investigations. There are also provisions in place for the MACC to deal with those who interfere with its work,” he added.
