The Democratic Action Party (DAP) today launched a fundraising campaign to assist with the Melaka State Election which is currently in in its campaigning period with polling day due to be held on 20 November 2021. DAP will be contesting 8 seats in the Melaka election, the first election to be held in Malaysia since the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the launch, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bukit Bintang, Foong Kui Lun commented that the Melaka State Election is crucial as it would provide an opportunity for voters to voice out their feelings on the last 2 years of the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly the failures of the Movement Control Order (MCO) and its various iterations by the Federal Government. He then urged for all Melakans to come back and exercise their right to vote, particularly those that are living outside of the state.
Furthermore, the DAP veteran also stressed that the Melaka election would prove to be a challenge for DAP and Pakatan Harapan (PH) as the SOP for campaigning from the Election Commission (EC) doesn’t allow for face to face campaigning, an ‘inconvenience’ that PH must overcome.
Also present at the launch was the MP for Damansara, Tony Pua who agreed with Foong’s statement and added that the Melaka State Election provides a crucial platform for Melakans to voice their opinions and protest against the failures of the Perikatan Nasional government which was formed by both UMNO and Bersatu. Tony, who is also DAP National Publicity Secretary then asserted that the party is looking to win all 8 seats they are contesting and make Pakatan Harapan return as the Melaka State Government.
The Damansara MP then clarified that out of all the 8 seats contested, 4 were marginal seats during the 14th General Election (GE14), whereby DAP only won by a slight margin, namely:
- N. 15 Pengkalan Batu (50.5%)
- N. 07 Gadek (41%)
- N. 21 Duyong ( 49%)
- N. 24 Bemban (45%)
Foong and Tony were joined by MP for Kulai, Teo Nie Ching and MP for Kota Melaka, Khoo Poay Tiong in launching the fundraising campaign, which allows for supporters to directly assist in retaining these marginal seats by directly donating to the respective DAP candidates for all four seats.
