Selangor residents can heave a sigh of relief after enduring two months of water rationing, as the Selangor state government has finally agreed to scrap the “two days with water, two days without” measure which has irked residents.

In areas with low water pressure, water supply is expected to be back to normal latest by Friday. Most places in the state can look forward to the end of water cuts starting tomorrow.

The decision was made in view of the increased water level at the Sungai Selangor dam from 36.39 percent on March 29 to 40.23 percent yesterday. 

Heavy showers have led to the replenishment of water in the treatment plants, allowing for higher production of treated water said to be able to ease the water shortage problem faced by the state.

According to Selangor MB Khalid Ibrahim, the state government had asked Syabas to abide by the decision and ensure that consumers would get water supply as usual, as was discussed in a meeting on Monday with Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN), Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS), and other water concessionaires.

“After taking into account efforts taken by the Selangor government to improve its raw water sources, SPAN agreed to lift the stage 1,3 and 4 water rationing in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur effective May 1,” said Ismail Kassim, Chairman of the National Water Services Commission (SPAN).

Yesterday, PKR’s defacto leader Anwar Ibrahim called on the Selangor state government to end water cuts in the state due to rising water levels in the Selangor dam. The Sungai Selangor supplies water to over 60% of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor. -The Rocket
