Malaysia is projected to exceed 1.2 million total Covid-19 cases and up to 11,000 fatalities between this year’s Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day
Our beloved country is close to achieving yet another unwanted milestone in the war against the Covid-19 pandemic as it is projected that we will join the ‘millionaire club of nations’ that records more than 1,000,000 cumulative Covid-19 cases by end of August.
In fact, as of yesterday, Malaysia is ranked number 35 among countries with the most cumulative total of Covid-19 cases in the world. Worse, we even have a higher ‘daily cases per million population’ and ‘daily deaths per million population’ than the previous world’s top worst performing nations such as the United States, India, France, Turkey, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and Germany.
Following these damning statistics, the Member of Parliament for Iskandar Puteri, Lim Kit Siang urges for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government to reveal their plans to steer Malaysia out of joining the Covid-19 ‘millionaire club of nations’ and not just turn a blind eye.
In a statement released yesterday, the DAP veteran asserted,
“What is the use of talking about any Covid-19 National Recovery Plan when there is no plan for Malaysia to avoid joining the Covid-19 ‘millionaire club of nations’ and the 10,000 to 11,000 fatalities between National Day and Malaysia Day?”
“It is time that the authorities tell the country what positive steps it is taking to rein in the surge of Covid-19 cases and fatalities,”
Lim further said that with the current rising rate of Covid-19 infections in our country, we will soon overtake Japan (ranked number 34 worst performing nation against the pandemic) by the start of the Tokyo Olympics on 23 July 2021. Furthermore, unlike other nations that have successfully dropped their infection rates such as the United States, Malaysia is going the complete opposite direction by recording new peak cases and new peak fatalities.

Just today, Malaysia recorded 7,654 new daily Covid-19 cases despite PN’s enforcement of a nationwide ‘total lockdown’ and Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) in most of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. If this current worrying trend continues, Malaysia will exceed 1,000,000 cumulative Covid-19 cases and 10,000 fatalities come 31 August 2021; an unwanted milestone on the day of our nation’s 64th Merdeka Day. – The Rocket.
