A crowd of 3000 turned up in the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) for a fundraising dinner organized by DAP Penang on 13th March 2012. The dinner received a good response and successfully raised RM500,000 for election funds.
Speakers at the dinner were Penang DAP Chairman Chow Kon Yeow, PAS Deputy President Mat Sabu, PKR Vice President Nurul Izzah Anwar, DAP Parliamentary Leader Lim Kit Siang, and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
In his speech, Guan Eng cautioned against being over-confident of recapturing Penang for Pakatan Rakyat (PR). “There is no such thing as a sure win state,” he warned the crowd.
Speaking in Malay, Mandarin, and English with a smattering of Hokkien, the DAP Secretary General expressed hope of gaining 90% non-Malay support and over 40% Malay support. He stressed that PR needed all races’ support to secure the state in the coming general election.
During the dinner, Penang DAP launched its election theme song “Ku Percaya”. In a rousing display of party spirit, a procession of party members marched in to the stadium to the tune of the 2008 election theme song, “Just Change”.
On stage, the flag bearers were joined by party leaders as the song transitioned to the upbeat new election theme. The mood was celebratory as the crowd joined in the singing. -The Rocket
