The Democratic Action Party (DAP) urges PAS to consider the political consequences of implementing hudud law at this point in time, naming several risks for PAS if it fell into UMNO’s trap.
A statement issued by Secretary General Lim Guan Eng after the party held its Central Executive Committee meeting last night read,
“DAP will urge PAS leaders to consider fully the political consequences of trusting UMNO to support the implementation of hudud laws which UMNO had previously opposed.”
Lim, who is Penang Chief Minister, named several risks involved in PAS’s push for hudud in Kelantan. These risks include the loss of non-Muslim voters who had supported PAS in the previous elections, losing Kelantan in the same way that PAS lost Terengganu in the 2004 general elections after passing hudud laws for the state in 2003, and losing all its seats won outside Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis and Kedah which were won with non-Muslim support.
PAS’s move to implement hudud also would lead to the break up of Pakatan Rakyat, DAP added, explaining that UMNO would succeed in its scheming as a result of the this.
The DAP reaffirmed the party’s consistent and unchanged opposition to the implementation of hudud law on Muslims by PAS, UMNO or any other party in Kelantan or Terengganu as unconstitutional and contrary to the 1957 Merdeka spirit and context in a multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-cultural society.
The statement also confirmed that PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang was wrong to say that PR and DAP had agreed to the implementation of hudud law in 2011. Lim added that Abdul Hadi should refer to the public statement by PR in 2011 which clearly stated DAP’s differences with PAS and opposition to the implementation of hudud.
“DAP leaders will actively engage with PAS leaders to emphasise that DAP had never agreed to hudud laws passed by PAS in Kelantan and Terengganu before or after the establishment of PR in 2008,” they said.
The party also condemned mainstream media for distorting facts and informing the public that DAP had agreed to the implementation of hudud by PAS in Kelantan and Terengganu despite incontrovertible written evidence in all documents that DAP had consistently opposed its implementation.
Lim advised all party leaders to issue written statements on this issue to avoid further distortion as well as counter the conspiracy of lies and falsehoods by certain mainstream media to destroy the confidence of the rakyat in DAP. -The Rocket
Regret to have come to such a situation. Umno might have learnt from the chinese warfare strategy of digging a trap for pakatan to fall apart at the expense of having it’s own race hands to be chopped off.For that , credit be given to Tun M for his stand. Keadilan, right from the start , after splitting up from umno was nothing but power crazy, a humilating intent of rising from the powers to be, by streets demonstrations and cheap publicity.Mostly youths and thoses left out . What contributions ? Except for Yb Rafizi courage of exposing quite a number of scandals which should be given praise.
