DAP Wanita fully supports the candidacy of PKR President Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the new Menteri Besar of Selangor to replace Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.

Dr Wan Azizah is seen as a suitable replacement for the post, given her longstanding experience and the important political role she has played over the years. Her tenacity throughout the Reformasi era until today has proven that she is able to face crisis.

In a statement, DAP Wanita Chief Chong Eng expressed her support for Pakatan Rakyat’s consensus  to name Dr Wan Azizah as Pakatan Rakyat’s sole choice for the Menteri Besar position, saying that she hoped all parties can respect the decision.

“Women are still not very well represented in the level of government leadership positions. We can get more meaningful success in this area, little by little,” she said.

“For instance, in Penang, we have many women who have been appointed to decision-making positions at the State Government level. Women are leading in the two local councils, namely MPPP and MPSP. We also have a female District Officer,” added the Padang Lalang State Assemblyperson.

Chong Eng also said that women with confidence and knowledge are able to influence and bring positive changes to families, society and the nation.

“I congratulate Pakatan Rakyat on coming to this joint decision and look forward to creating history with the first female Menteri Besar in Malaysia,” she continued.

Last Sunday the Pakatan Rakyat Leadership Council decided on Dr Wan Azizah as the sole nominee for the Selangor MB post after Khalid Ibrahim lost the confidence of the majority of the State Legislative Assembly.

The Selangor Sultan has advised Khalid to wait until his return from overseas before seeking an audience to determine his position. -The Rocket
