Goodbye Edward

DAP mourns the passing of Bukit Gasing state assemblyman Edward Lee Poh Lin on 20th December 2011 at the age of 61. First-term lawmaker Lee lost a two-year battle with colon cancer, leaving behind his wife and three sons.

Lee contributed to the Pakatan Rakyat State Government as Assistant Exco Member for Tourism, Consumer Affairs, and Environment. He assisted PKR’s Elizabeth Wong in this capacity, both sharing a passion for environmental issues. Under their watchful eyes, the Selangor Government upheld a policy of freezing permits to degazette forest reserve for agricultural use since late 2008 as it contradicted the concept of sustainable forest management.

Since before his foray in politics, Lee had been an active campaigner for the local issues. He was a co-founder of the Save Bukit Gasing campaign to protect the few green lungs left in Petaling Jaya against further development and erosion. He was also vocal and active in various Residents’ Associations in Petaling Jaya.

As a committee member of the Special Select Committee on Competency Accountability and Transparency (SELCAT), Lee was part of the groundbreaking Selangor PR team which upheld accountability of public funds. One of Selcat’s triumphs was exposing mismanagement in the Wives of Selangor Welfare and Assemblymen and MPs Charity Organisation (Balkis) under the previous BN administration. – The Rocket
