KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 9: To sue, or not to sue — that is the question.
An opposition leader has condemned Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for his ambivalent and ambiguous lawsuit against international newspaper The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) for its reports alleging embezzlement by the premier.
DAP Parliamentary Leader Lim Kit Siang in a statement said “From the letter of Najib’s lawyers, there appears to be room for dispute as to whether the WSJ report as it stands is defamatory of Najib or not.”
“I do not know what is going to be WSJ response to the letter by Najib’s lawyers, but under these circumstances, nobody can rule out a scenario where the WSJ report remains while no legal action is instituted by Najib’s lawyers against WSJ.
“Najib has notched up another precedent, sending lawyers’ letter which is ambivalent whether it paves the way for the Prime Minister to sue or not to sue Wall Street Journal,” added Lim.
Lim said that even though no legal statement has been drafted to strip Najib of his position, Malaysians should remain adamant on this matter as this country should not allow a person devoid of moral integrity to govern anymore.
Najib’s legal firm Hafarizam Wan & Aisha Mubarak yesterday sent a letter to WSJ demanding a response within 14 days so that they could “appropriate legal resource he (Najib) can take to seek redress in relation to the publication of these articles.” In the letter, Najib also sought for clarification that WSJ stands by its articles about him.
Last Friday, WSJ published a sensational report alleging that some US$700 million of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds had been transferred to Najib’s personal accounts. It later uploaded documents supporting their claim. However, the allegations have been denied by both Najib and 1MDB, with the former decrying that the controversy was a political plot orchestrated to topple him.
