GEORGE TOWN, 15 December: DAP National Chairperson, Karpal Singh in his opening speech stressed that PAS is an important ally and friend to the party within the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
“We might have several differences, but it (the cooperation) is solid for a party with ideology and principles,” he said to thunderous applause from the delegates and attending guests.
Stressing his statement, Karpal said “for DAP, there are no permanent friends or eternal enemies, only permanent principles.”
He said, what is important is that Pakatan Rakyat could not afford to be reckless with an enemy that always wants to divide the understanding built between the PR coalition parties.
“Before this nobody would have expected that DAP can work with PAS, but now the Malaysian political scenario has changed.”
“If we are not changing according to time, we will be changed by time,” he said confidently.
Penang Leads
While referring to Penang as a good example, Karpal, who is also Member of Parliament for Gelugor puts a high optimism that PR can give an excellent service.
“Penang has proven to achieve teeming success under PR, what has been achieved in Penang will be achieved too in Putrajaya. It is a good example to be followed.”
Karpal has also called for the delegates not to forget the party veterans, their many sacrifices and endured difficult times to be appreciated.
“Without the veterans, you won’t be here,” he said.
He emphasised the DAP’s stand in giving full support for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to become Prime Minister should Pakatan Rakyat be given the mandate to govern Malaysia.
In spite his serious and spirited speech, Karpal took a moment to share his victory in his defamation suit against Utusan Malaysia, in which Karpal was awarded RM70,000 in damages and costs.
“Looks like the number 70,000 is a lucky number. Mahfuz and Salahuddin Ayub also won RM70,000 against Utusan Malaysia. Mahfuz suggested that I should put a goat to slaughter. I said, not a goat, but let’s put Barisan Nasional to slaughter.” – The Rocket
