Media Statement by Bukit Gelugor MP, Ramkarpal Singh on 22 July 2020.
I refer to the media statement by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) dated 22 July 2020 whereby said Minister alleged that my below statement during the debate on the motion of Thank On The Royal Address on 21 July 2020 in the Dewan Rakyat was baseless and an act of misleading the House which may refer me to the Rights and Privileges Committee under Standing Order 36(12):
“In the past it has been done, in the case of former Chief Justice, Tun Zaki Azmi was alleged made bribes to certain court official in Sarawak. I believed it would have been around 2007 if I’m not mistaken where the former Bukit Gelugor MP as well have done the same, played a video or audio recording in Parliament for the purpose of informing the Dewan of what has been asserted. Because in this part of my speech, it is a part of what I would like to assert in my debate.”
I firmly deny the said allegations of misleading the Dewan and there is a precedent whereby the former Member of Parliament for Bukit Gelugor has in fact, on 25 February 2009, played an audio recording in the Dewan as part of his speech during the time. I hereby attach a copy of the Parliament Hansard on 25 February 2009, which clearly shows the matter on page 57.
I also assert that the said speech by the former Member of Parliament for Bukit Gelugor can be viewed and downloaded from Youtube through this link under the title ‘Singh is KING…..KING is Singh2’, specifically from 3.50 minute onward.
In my speech, I have uttered that I believed the speech was made around 2007 but I have given a notice to the Dewan that I might be wrong as far as the date is concerned when I said,
“…I believed it would have been around 2007 if I’m not mistaken where the former Bukit Gelugor MP as well have done the same…”.
Considering all the matters above, it is a fact that there is a precedent as mentioned in my speech in Dewan and the issue of trying to mislead the Parliament as mentioned by the Minister does not arise.
Ramkarpal Singh,
Member of Parliament for Bukit Gelugor,
DAP National Legal Bureau Chairman.
