Perikatan Nasional’s decision to implement the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in Klang Valley raises questions as it was decided without agreement and consultation with the Selangor state government.
Member of Parliament for Bagan, Lim Guan Eng has stressed that it would make more sense if targeted lockdowns were implemented on areas with high number of cases.
If cases do not go down, then enforcing a statewide lockdown would be appropriate. This would be aligned with what Sabah has done.
Although the latest CMCO will negatively impact the economy not only at the state level but throughout the country, Malaysians are willing to persevere. With one condition however, the CMCO is implemented in a fair and just manner.
“Whether these conditions will be met needs to be clarified so that the implementation of the latest CMCO is seen solely as a way to keep the public safe, “he said in a post on Facebook, today.
The failure to negotiate with the Selangor state government and previously the other Pakatan Harapan states, he said, showed that the PN government failed to carry out the task of uniting the people to overcome the new wave of Covid-19.
“The people want to see a concerted effort of all policy makers without political interests to fight Covid-19,” he added.
Yesterday, the National Security Council (MKN) decided that CMCO will be re-imposed on Selangor, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya from October 14 to October 27.
However, the decision was not discussed with the Selangor state government who was taken aback by the sudden decision.
According to Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, only a few districts in the Klang Valley recorded a worrying number of Covid-19 cases. Thus a statewide lockdown is not justifiable at this point.
