KUALA LUMPUR, 30 APR: Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Election Publicity Chief Dr. Hew Kuan Yau invites the public to protest the GST in the 4 day stay in Dataran Merdeka, starting tomorrow.
Also known as “Superman” in the Malaysian Chinese community, he asks the protesters to stay on in Dataran Merdeka after the Anti-GST rally concludes tomorrow.
Calling it the “Protest with pillows”, Hew says that the pillow is a “soft weapon” as compared to the fist, however, it is a strong signal of protest.
Participants aim to prolong the rally as a strong protest against the tax implementation which is to be implemented in April 2015. Hew will also embark on a four day hunger strike to draw attention to the cause.
“I will also go on a hunger strike beginning tomorrow at 8 in the morning. ‘Fasting’ and ‘pillows’ will be my weapons against the cruel BN. I will not fight back if the powers that be try to be aggressive with me,” added the famous orator.
Dr Hew, who once fasted for 16 days, is confident that he can last without food for the entire planned duration of four days. He explained the purpose behind the program, held in conjunction with the May day rally.
“If we just allow the rally to follow the normal flow (gathering, procession, speeches and photos), there will be no impact.
“This tame practice would not exert the pressure that is needed on the Barisan Nasional (BN) government,” he said, adding that as long as Pakatan and the civil movement do not toughen up and protest bravely, BN’s iron fist would harden its grip on the nation.
He invites as many people as possible, especially the rally attendees, to join the “protest with pillows” and hunger strike to send a clear message to BN.
“I am opposed to all acts of vandalism or violence during the protest, but the protest must be clear and radical to create political pressure on the government,” he says.
Also supporting the cause tomorrow will be activist Hishamuddin Rais, Himpunan Hijau’s president Wong Tack, student activist Adam Adli and DAP’s National Youth Leader Teo Kok Seong.
He hopes that many would join him at the rally that begins on Labour Day, tomorrow.
“Those who come do not have to starve for long periods, just fast as much as you are able to. They can come just to spend the night here in protest, as long as there is some effort to put pressure on the federal government.
“If we consistently abide by our rights as stated in the constitution, even the gentlest methods would force the authoritarian government to hear our voices,” he stressed.
