Wee Ka Siong must heed Penangites’ call to retain iconic ferry service

Press Statement by DAP Dewan Negara Senator, Lim Hui Ying on 28 December 2020:

Wee Ka Siong should stop being defensive and heed Penangites’ call to retain our iconic ferry service

Yesterday, on his Facebook account, Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong tried to “co-opt” me to support his callous plan to terminate the iconic Penang ferry service by saying that I supported the introduction of catamarans to replace the iconic ferries.

My stance, reflected in my speech in the Senate, is very clear: retain the iconic Penang ferry service.

No one is saying that we object to the catamarans. However, and I made it very clear in my speech, the federal government should continue the iconic ferry service, even if at a slightly lower frequency, to complement the new catamaran service.

While three ferries are currently in use, I have called for the federal government to retain at least two of these iconic ferries so that this historic and unique Penang water transport experience can be continued even after the introduction of the catamarans.

In fact, I have also urged the federal government to continue the current iconic ferry service after 31 December 2020 against its original plan to stop all ferry service until the new catamarans arrived.

This is not the first time that MCA is trying to divide DAP leaders with lies that only our Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng is opposed to terminating the iconic Penang ferry service. MCA had also claimed that Anthony Loke had made the decision to terminate the ferry services when Loke was the Transport Minister. MCA’s lies was comprehensively rebutted by Loke yesterday.

Wee and MCA should stop being defensive, desperately finding ways, including, twisting our words, to justify his callous plan to terminate the iconic Penang ferry service.

Instead the Transport Minister should heed the call of Penangites to continue our iconic ferry service, according to the original plan of the Pakatan Harapan federal government, as confirmed by his own colleague, Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul. Tengku Zafrul had confirmed in Parliament that the previous Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng had in writing imposed a condition to Penang Port Sdn Bhd that the iconic Penang Ferry Services be continued in exchange for RM30 million cash grant.
