DAP questioned the Najib administration for its silence regarding yesterday’s UMNO youth protest at the DAP Headquarters, as responsible government leaders would be obliged to respond to the threats, vandalism and assault committed by the UMNO mob.
In a press conference at the DAP HQ today, Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo pointed out that a threat to burn down a building is a very serious matter and is a criminal offence under the Penal Code.
“I call upon Najib Razak as Chairman of Barisan Nasional and as the leader of UMNO to respond. Let us know what his views are on what happened yesterday,” said Gobind.
“He [Najib] must, as the leader of UMNO take full responsibility of what happened here yesterday,” he affirmed.
In the 3.30pm incident, the protesters, led by Federal Territory UMNO Youth Chief Mohd Razlan Muhamad Rafi threatened to burn down the DAP National Headquarters. His supporters were heard shouting “bunuh sahaja!” (just kill them!).
Besides vandalising public property and burning an effigy, the aggressive protest concluded with Mohd Razlan tearing and throwing a memorandum at the Serdang MP Dr Ong Kian Ming who was on hand to meet the demonstrators.
“I came here to throw this memorandum at your face!” said Mohd Razlan.
Dr Ong said he could not read the memorandum as he was “not good at jigsaw puzzles”.
“This is the first time that I’m seeing a person who hands in a memorandum by tearing up his own memorandum,” Dr Ong said.
The Serdang MP also challenged Khairy Jamaluddin, UMNO Youth Chief to respond to the acts of the mob.
“I call upon Khairy Jamalludin to apologize; he is very active on Twitter, he likes to say a lot of things on Twitter, but as of yesterday, there have not been any public comments made regarding the incident.
“This is very unbecoming of the UMNO Youth leader, and i urge him strongly, to apologize and to take responsibility for the actions of his youth leaders here in KL,” he said.
Police stood by as acts of provocation took place
The DAP leaders also highlighted that one of the DAP employees was physically provoked by Mohd Razlan, showing the press a KiniTV video where the UMNO leader poked the nose of the DAP staff while shouting at him.
“That’s assault, and we want the police to take action for that,” said Gobind Singh who said that there can be no excuse for such a behaviour.
Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng, who was also present at the press conference questioned the police for not arresting any demonstrators as they had done to the Bersih rally demonstrators.
“Criminal intimidation took place right in front of their eyes!” he said of the threats to burn the building.
Following the incident yesterday, DAP have lodged a police report at the Pudu police station regarding the destruction of the DAP signboard and the threats to burn the building. Dr Ong reiterated that the party was not against a peaceful demonstration, but objected to how yesterday’s incident damaged private property.
“DAP is not against peaceful assembly, we recognise and respect the right for any party or organization to have a peaceful assembly, but the way and the manner in which it was conducted outside our HQ was totally uncivilized and unacceptable.
“It shows that the UMNO youth yesterday, were nothing better than a bunch of gangsters,” said Ong Kian Ming -The Rocket
