What type of normalcy will Malaysia achieve by relying on vaccination alone without taking into account the record of daily infections and deaths?
DAP Secretary-General, Lim Guan Eng has slammed the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government for its irresponsible act of boasting about our country’s Covid-19 vaccination rate without taking into account Malaysia’s harrowing record daily infections and casualties. Just yesterday, our nation recorded a staggering 11,079 new daily Covid-19 cases and 125 deaths from the virus; making the cumulative toll to 6,385 deaths.
In a statement today, Lim called the claims by both Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddian Yassin and Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Ismail Sabri that we are on track to achieve herd immunity based on the daily vaccination rate being amongst the highest in the world is highly inappropriate and irresponsible given how Covid-19 cases have soared and worse, taken so many innocent lives in Malaysia. Furthermore, he also criticised both leaders for carelessly ignoring the fact that our new daily infections rate are above the world average.
Lim, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bagan further stressed,
“By only relying on vaccination rate alone without taking into account the record number of daily infections and deaths, what type of normalcy can the country achieve when the country achieves herd immunity.”
Moreover, the DAP Secretary-General also shared these damning statistics regarding PN’s failure to handle the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia:
- Malaysia’s average Covid-19 cases per million people on July 12 is 265 cases; nearly 5 times worse compared to the world’s average of 57 cases.
- The positivity rate on July 13 based on number of tests done producing infections is 9.48%, far above the 5% recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
- The Economist recently placed Malaysia last out of 50 countries in its normalcy index for countries recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the same statement, Lim also categorised Ismail Sabri’s performance as rapidly disappointing after the new Deputy Prime Minister declared that Malaysia will quickly return to normal by only relying on vaccination but not on mass screening to curb the rise in infections. Truly, this divided and dysfunctional PN government has no hope or the capacity to handle the escalating Covid-19 crisis.
Lim then urged for Mahiaddin’s resignation in order to make way for a new, more capable government by iterating,
“Mahiaddin should resign as Prime Minister and make way for a new government with a fresh thinking and professional approach to deal with not only Covid-19 but also the economic crisis.”
