Following Bersatu President and former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s spate of outbursts in the past two days, questions have been raised as to what stance will his party be taking post Melaka State Election. Specifically, whether Bersatu would dare retract support from Prime Minister Ismail Sabri should UMNO wipe Perikatan Nasional out in the state polls.
In a statement yesterday, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Iskandar Puteri, Lim Kit Siang nudged Muhyiddin for an answer and urged him to voice out his party’s stance on the matter, saying,
“Muhyiddin should state whether he will continue to support Ismail Sabri as Prime Minister if Bersatu is completely wiped out by UMNO in the Melaka general election on Nov. 20,”
Yesterday, Muhyiddin claimed that he was not vindictive and allowed an UMNO man to replace him as Prime Minister of Malaysia. Furthermore, he also claimed that despite having a choice to dissolve Parliament and call for fresh polls after losing majority, he went against the option of dissolution and instead, nominated UMNO’s Ismail Sabri as Prime Minister.
However, tensions have been high between Bersatu and UMNO in this Melaka State Election with both parties going back and forth throwing shots at each other. The spat seems to reach its peaking point when Muhyiddin gave a warning towards UMNO in a rare press conference by the Bersatu President, in which Muhyiddin asserted that he could simply ‘press the button’ and UMNO-led governments in state and federal levels would crumble.
Speaking of Muhyiddin’s outbursts, Lim Kit Siang also commented on the series of ‘confessions’ made by the Bersatu President which confirmed him as being the main conspirator of the ‘Sheraton Move’ which toppled a democratically elected government after 22 months. As such, Lim called the outbursts a powerful testimony of Muhyiddin’s betrayal of Pakatan Harapan.
The DAP veteran asserted,
“Muhyiddin never really believed in the Pakatan Harapan general election manifesto as it was only a sleight-of-hand for Muhyiddin to deceive the voters.”
Meanwhile in another statement yesterday, the Iskandar Puteri MP also commented that Muhyiddin has a time-bomb in Melaka as he is unable to announce Mas Emieyati Samsuddin as Perikatan Nasional’s nominee for the post of Melaka Chief Minister due to objections form inside Bersatu. As of today, Perikatan Nasional remains the only coalition contesting that is yet to reveal its nominee for the CM post. – The Rocket.
